چکیده

Little is known about the mechanics of breathing in newborn babies. The difficulties encountered in obtaining spirometric tracings in infants have largely been surmounted by the use of a body plethysmograph (Shaw and Hopkins, 1931; Murphy and Thorpe, 1931; Cross, 1949; Boutourline-Young and Smith, 1950), and in the past 20 years the normal range of infants' tidal volume has been established. Up to now, however, no measurements of the intrathoracic pressure have been reported and no attempt has been made to measure the work required to ventilate the lungs. This paper reports a study of the mechanics of breathing in newly born babies in whom the mechanical work of breathing has been measured from simultaneous tracings of the intraoesophageal pressure and air flow in a manner similar to that already reported in adults by Mcllroy, Marshall, and Christie (1954).

Effects of continuous positive airway pressure on lung mechanics of babies after operation for congenital heart disease.

The effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on lung mechanics was investigated in 12 babies after operation for severe congenital heart disease. At the time of study all babies were receiving or being weaned from ventilatory support and had abnormally low lung volume or compliance. During CPAP there was a fall in the pulmonary resistance which, with a slight decrease in minute vent...

Necrotizing Enterocolitis: A dreadful condition of premature babies

NEC is inflammatory necrosis of intestine with most common site being terminal ileum and ascending colon in preterm babies (1). The condition is typically seen in premature infants, and the timing of its onset is generally inversely proportional to the gestational age of the baby at birth, i.e. The earlier a baby is born, longer is the time of risk for NEC in premature babies. The incidence of ...

Cardiovascular stress hyperreactivity in babies of smokers and in babies born preterm.

BACKGROUND Being born preterm, small, and to a mother who smokes are common perinatal complications with major public health implications. Evidence suggests that each affects the body's structure and function in ways that could increase susceptibility to cardiovascular dysfunction later in life. Here, we used 2 routine stress reactivity tests to identify incipient "silent" programming of cardio...

Methods: In a descriptive cross-sectional study, Apgar score was assessed for 462 newborns at the 4 centers of Afshar, Madar, Ka...

Cardiorespiratory patterns in siblings of babies with sudden infant death syndrome.

Clinical data and 24 hour tape recordings of electrocardiogram (ECG) and abdominal breathing movements were collected from 301 infants who had had a sibling who had suffered the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Of these, 261 were referred cases, and 40 were recorded prospectively as part of a population based study; none of the 301 subsequently died. Fifty five of the referred siblings who ...
